Gossip is primarily about individuals and the content of the message lacks significant to the people gossiping.

Rumors, however, contains information that is significant to the lives of those communicating the message and can be about individuals or other topics. ( DiFonzo & Bordia 2006).

Usually, rumor will occur when available information is both interesting and ambiguous. Thus, rumors serves the function of helping to make sense of ambiguous information and helping potential threats, whereas gossip serves to entertain and supply social information. (DiFonzo & Bordia, 2007)

Conclusion : Gossip and rumors are one of the source of information in informal communication that occur in organizational communication. Based on the DiFonzo and Bordia: Kurland and Pelled) Rumor and gossip are often ways in which employee can relieve stress and anxiety, respond to perceived organizational wrongs in non aggressive way,maintain sense of control and increase their power in organization.

Personal conclusion : no wonder people tend to gossip a lot :P
